It’s important for both new and existing patients to understand the value of regular dental check-ups. At our practice, we aim to provide comprehensive care, so I want to explain what you can expect during a dental check-up at LPID.
At LPID, we are a multi-specialist practice, meaning you’ll be under the care of experts in various fields of dentistry. Your care might be managed by a specialist periodontist, prosthodontist, a specialist in restorative dentistry, or an implantologist. In some cases, you may be seen by multiple specialists, each focusing on different areas of your mouth at different times to ensure the best possible care.
During a routine check-up, we begin by assessing the function of your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) to rule out any signs of pathology, such as clicking or pain. We also perform an oral cancer screening, carefully examining the soft tissues inside your cheeks, the floor of your mouth, tongue, and palate to ensure everything is within normal limits.
Next, we focus on your teeth, starting with an evaluation of your occlusion — the way your teeth come together when you bite. We check for any signs of trauma or wear, which could indicate damage to your teeth from repetitive use. We also examine your teeth for decay or issues with existing restorations, such as old fillings, crowns, or veneers. For patients with dental implants, we ensure that the implants are healthy, with no loose screws, and that the surrounding bone and gum tissue are in good condition.
To thoroughly assess your oral health, we perform an intraoral examination and take x-rays. Typically, we recommend a full set of x-rays every two to three years. We also take intraoral photographs to document your condition and to help explain our findings to you. If we notice areas where your oral hygiene could be improved, we’ll discuss techniques and tips to help you maintain better oral health.
We’ll also address any new concerns that may have arisen since your last dental appointment and discuss the treatment options available to you. Our motto at the practice is “less is more” — early detection helps prevent more extensive damage and reduces the need for more complex treatments in the future.
Whether you’re a new patient or someone we’ve seen before, I look forward to meeting you and helping you achieve optimal oral health through regular check-up appointments!
