Everything You Need to Know

Understanding Tooth Discoloration

Your teeth are composed of an inner layer called dentin and a hard outer layer known as enamel, which protects the teeth. Over time, a thin film forms on top of your enamel from the foods and drinks you consume, gradually penetrating the porous enamel and leading to discoloration.

While routine dental check-ups and hygiene visits effectively clean your teeth, they cannot remove deep-set stains that have penetrated the enamel. These stains require a chemical reaction, specifically an oxidation process, to break down the staining compounds.

What Causes Tooth Discoloration

What Causes Tooth Discoloration?

Tooth discoloration can result from either extrinsic (external) or intrinsic (internal) stains. Here are some common causes:

What Is Teeth Whitening and What Does It Involve?

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic procedure designed to lighten the natural colour of your teeth without removing any tooth structure. While it won’t make your teeth brilliant white, it can significantly lighten their existing shade by a few levels. It’s important to note that teeth whitening is effective only on natural teeth and does not change the colour of crowns, veneers, or composite fillings.

The active ingredients in teeth whitening products are usually hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. These chemicals work by opening the pores in the enamel, allowing oxygen molecules to break down deep-seated stains.

Our Treatment Options

At LPID, we offer two main teeth whitening methods: In-Surgery (Laser) Whitening and Home Whitening Kits.

In-Surgery (Laser) Whitening

In-surgery whitening involves a professional cleaning to remove surface debris and a thorough check to ensure your gums are healthy. A whitening gel is then applied to your teeth, and a bright laser light is used to activate and enhance the effects of the gel. The entire process takes about an hour, and a home whitening kit may be recommended to maintain your results.

Home Whitening Kits

This method begins with taking an impression of your teeth in our clinic to create a custom whitening tray. You’ll then apply a whitening solution to the tray and wear it at home for 14 consecutive days. Depending on the desired results, this process may need to be repeated.

How Long Will My Teeth Whitening Results Last?

The results of teeth whitening can last up to three years, but this varies depending on individual habits. Factors such as smoking or frequent consumption of highly pigmented foods and drinks can shorten the longevity of your results. Regular dental hygiene visits are also essential to maintain a bright, healthy smile.

Am I a Suitable Candidate for Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening can benefit most people with natural teeth. If you’ve noticed that your teeth have dulled or discoloured, whitening could boost your confidence and enhance your smile. However, teeth whitening is not suitable for everyone. It’s not recommended for individuals with chronic sensitivity, oral cancer, advanced periodontal disease, or severely worn or damaged enamel. Teeth that appear translucent may also become more pronounced after whitening.

If you’re considering restorative treatments like crowns or veneers, whitening your teeth beforehand can lead to a more aesthetically pleasing final result.

What Aftercare Is Required?

If you experience sensitivity after whitening, a desensitising toothpaste may be recommended. Maintaining regular dental check-ups and hygiene appointments will help keep your smile bright and ensure the health of your teeth and gums.

Teeth Whitening Regulations

Teeth whitening in the UK is regulated by the General Dental Council (GDC), ensuring that only fully-registered professional clinicians perform the procedure. This regulation guarantees a high standard of care, allowing you to feel confident and comfortable throughout your treatment.
